Music therapist Emma O’Brien joined us on the show to talk about her great operatic work Avatara. A tale of 5 cancer patients, it explores the tentative balance between life and death, sadness and joy, love and hate. Ultimately, it remains an uplifting piece that has many hopeful moments and should have you leaving with a feeling of calm and appreciation for life.

The latest incarnation of this project, that has taken more than 5 years, includes the inclusion of the history of medicine juxtaposed with the emotional rich and powerful story of the patients. The work also now includes some new additions including puppetry and multimedia projections to enhance the story telling.

Certainly worth seeing. Plus as a special offer to JOY members, Emma has told me that when you go to book, if you mention the word “Transform”, you’ll get 5 dollars off your ticket. Brilliant!

Celebrating the power of the human voice as a transformative theatrical experience

AVATARA – THE OPERA
The drama of human life, played out in the microcosm of the cell

Four performances only. Space 28, Southbank.  Australia 16 – 19 April 2009

Based on five personal stories, avaTära – The Opera is a contemporary music drama about the extraordinary transformation of ordinary people through the catalyst of cancer. From 16 April for four performances only, this showcase production at Southbank’s Space 28 will feature a chamber ensemble, multi media and puppetry.

Directed by Robert Draffin, and conducted by Mark Shiell, avaTära – The Opera features internationally acclaimed performers Andrea Katz, Ian Cousins, Judith Dodsworth, Merlyn Quaife, Michael Bishop and Emma O’Brien and puppeteers Sarah Kriegler and Jacob Williamson.

avaTära – The Opera’s first incarnation began as a specialised song-writing project with composer and music therapist Emma O’Brien and five cancer patients (Bruce, Dianne, Marla, Lisa and Mary) from the Royal Melbourne Hospital, as documented in the internationally award-winning film Opera Therapy (2005).

“I want to share our stories in music with everyone, so we can help other people,
so we can let them know they are not alone.” Bruce (1956-2007)

Now complete following significant creative development of the original 2004 piece, avaTära – The Opera honours the personal stories of its original participants and offers a window into the lives of those living with cancer while challenging established conceptions of disease, health and medicine.

“Cancer touches the lives of one in three Australians,” said composer Emma O’Brien. “avaTära features deeply personal and emotionally charged narratives that are both archetypal and relevant at the same time. Opera provides the ideal story-telling setting because it can handle such extremities in emotions – love and hate, sickness and health, happiness and sadness, antibody life and death herbal remedies .”

This fluid moving chamber work draws on puppetry and multimedia to take audiences on an inspirational journey of emotions and revelations. The event was registered in Australia directory
